Chapter Eleven
The cat jumping onto the bed woke Meg. She opened her eyes to find the darkness of night had lifted to a dull gray, suggesting a cloudy morning. The master bedroom boasted large windows, and the blinds were angled to let in the light. She nudged Declan over. No holding her tenderly through the night for this guy. He lay sprawled on his stomach, taking up most of the bed. Even with the chill in the night air he slept shirtless, the sheet pushed down to his waist. The temptation was strong to stroke that broad back, to wake him in the most interesting of ways, and see how he liked making love in the morning. That he’d already proven himself to be a three-shot kind of guy, and that she’d matched him shot for shot, had her feeling a little smug.
Buttercup padded over the blankets to thrust her head under Meg’s hand, already purring. She pet the ginger and black fur, finally letting the thoughts she’d been holding at bay roll to the forefront of her mind. Yesterday had been a wonderful, almost idyllic reprieve, but today she had to face reality. Jail, trial, prison—that was her future. Whatever was developing between her and Declan would grow cold with her absence, dying embers in a neglected hearth.
Calling herself a fool, she wiped at her eyes with the edge of the sheet, and slipped from the bed, going to her room to retrieve clean clothes. She planned to shower, pack her bags, have breakfast with Declan, then go into town to meet with the police chief. The flash drive was secure in the side pocket of her duffel bag and she’d need to retrieve it before going into town.
Walking into the shower, she turned the faucets, waiting and wondering how much time she’d have to spend in jail. Meg tipped back her head, eyes screwed shut, and let the hot water beat over her, refusing to think how horrible prison showers were likely to be. She gave a startled yelp when the curtain yanked back. Declan stepped under the spray, frown in place.
He framed her face in his hands, brows lowered. “You’ve been crying.”
She didn’t bother denying it. “Yeah, I have.”
He was aroused and she expected him to make good on that promise, but he continued to study her, thumbs brushing over her cheekbones. He lowered his lips to hers in a kiss so tender it made her heart ache.
“Don’t, Declan. Please, don’t. I don’t want to fall in love with you.” Her voice shook.
“Could you?”
Afraid of the answer, she didn’t speak. Instead, she reached for him, closing soapy hands around his erection and eliciting a rumbling growl from deep in his chest. They made love in the close confines of the steamy shower, coming together with an intensity that held an edge of desperation.

Meg chewed her thumbnail as she looked over her belongings. She hadn’t really thought it through, but she felt sure she wouldn’t be able to take her things with her when she went to jail.
